What we cannot prepare for, we must prevent. 75 years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is high time to ban these uniquely inhumane weapons of war and to honor the memory of the hundreds of thousands of victims of bombings. Prohibiting and eliminating weapons with catastrophic humanitarian consequences should not be controversial. Yet, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has not entered into force and we are seeing the worrying trends towards a new nuclear arms race. As this year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we must continue conveying a message to the world that the use of such weapons, under any circumstances, would be unacceptable in humanitarian, moral and legal terms. And we must strive to keep the evidence of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons at the center of the debate. Because we believe that voices of the A-bomb victims, Hibakusha, should be amplified, this online event will also contribute to the efforts to preserve the memories and testimonies of Hibakusha and their experience of the atomic bombings for the next generation with increased engagement with youth as a vector.
